Winter getaway
We stayed over at the Cavendish with two friends, enjoyed the warmth and comfort of the hotel following a long winter walk. We had dinner in the restaurant the same evening. The service and food were excellent. We had a lovey time.
A great stay at a great hotel
The Cavendish Arms was the perfect base for exploring and enjoying Cartmel and the surrounding area. The staff were great - helpful, engaging and diligent. Our room - over in the square above a shop - was like a private suite but at a bargain price. The food exceeded our expectations - the menu was apparently new and for me its highlight was the pig's cheek starter. The meat was tender and packed with flavour. The atmosphere in the bar was great - everyone was friendly, new friends were made and the drinks flowed. All in all a great stay at a great hotel.
Comfortable stay
Well appointed comfortable room with great selection of tea/coffee/biscuits. Beautiful bathroom with oodles of hot water. Separate access from pub was handy.
Excellent Weekend
We love staying at the Cavendish, a really nice atmosphere, great food, excellent staff.
Lovely stay. Very nice traditional hotel
Loved this old building in the centre of Cartmel. Room was large, comfortable and immaculately clean. Suggestion: the weather during our stay was bitterly cold. Although the room itself was warm, there was an awful draft from the window - the single blind just wasn’t adequate. You might want to consider putting a heavier curtain for such conditions. Breakfast was amazing, served by really attentive staff. Didn’t dine there - there wasn’t anything on the menu that I wanted. That’s only me though, don’t take it as a reflection of the quality. All in all, excellent value for money and an enjoyable stay.
Super! As ever.....
A superb contrast to the end of the road.!Whilst all the pubs in Cartmel (of which there are a number) this is the best by a long way. Unlike the others this has been run and owned by the same 'Mine Host' (Richard) for many, many years and is independent and not part of chain.Relaxed, unpretentious, convivial, warm & characterful and very old. Food (breakfast, lunch or dinner) is excellent, deliciously cookedto 'gastro' standard (although I hate that word) and most importantly, local ingredients! The last time Iwe stayed (a couple of weeks ago) a bloke came in and asked"could he watch the football whilst he had his meal?" The answer was 'no'.He left. (Phew!)
Food
Although the food was Fantastic including the deserts. We would have liked more options to pick from on the specials board as we stayed for a few days and it got a little bit samey. Although we must add that the tart tartan with liquorice ice cream was very well thought out a real pleasure to eat . A must to go and have a dinner and desert if in the area.
Great short stay in Cartmel
We've visited Cartmel a few times and have stopped by the Cavendish Arms for food and drinks, but this was our first time staying here.Nice place, simple room but clean and well presented, great value for money and all you need really.Great bar & restaurant, friendly staff too.No onsite parking, but there's a car park at the racecourse which is only a short walk.Would happily go back, whether that's for a drink, a meal, or to stay over.
Overnight stay
Old building, lovely room with large bed.Evening meal in the pub/ restaurant was delicious.
Perfectly perfect
Love staying at the Cavendish Arms, great food, great service and a relaxing atmosphere as always.
lovely relaxing stay
We had a one night stay at the Cavendish Arms as we were eating at L'enclume which is practically next door, so very convenient. The stay was perfect - rooms were relaxing and nicely furnished with a great selection of teas and coffee. Breakfast also had a great selection. We would certainly stay again.well
Excellent
Highly Recommended. Spotlessly clean comfortable room. Great food both in the evening and at breakfast. Well stocked bar. Parking at the nearby racecourse.
Lovely weekend break
Really enjoyed our stay in Cartmel, cavendish is aquirky, traditional pub, don’t expect straight door frames but you do get good quality food and very good service
Always love staying with you
…great location, welcome, rooms and the most fabulous breakfast!
Lovely place to stay
A wonderful small hotel/ Pub with an excellent restaurant and great atmosphere. The staff were friendly and attentive
Going to the Predator Experience
Booked in as close to where we were going. We were very happy with our couple of days stay. Food excellent. Lovely place. . Only down side is no parking on site.
Leisure break
We were more than happy with the accommodation especially the food which was excellent
Wonderful
We absolutely loved our stay at The Cavendish Arms .Richard and the Staff were lovely and helpful.Staying in such a historic building was so atmospheric and cosy .We had dinner there for two nights and really enjoyed the food and wine and breakfast was delicious .We intend to return .Thank you
Relaxing break.
A warm welcome from helpful pleasant staff. Friendly bar/restaurant. Good food, especially breakfast.
Great Place
We really enjoyed our stay and Angus was great
Pleasant accommodation
Friendly staff and good food.
Excellant and good value for moeyn
The room was comfortable and clean, the food was different to normal pub food, well prepared and presented, and the service efficient and friendly.
Excellent
Very happy with everything.
Atmospheric
Quaint and comfy, we were welcomed by a log fire burning in the bar - so lovely. We had room 9 faced the road, but lovely low window with an arm chair in it to watch the world go by. Room had everything we needed and loads of hot water for our baths, hairdryer, loose tea ( bit of a phaff but it was good) Ate in the restaurant was ok pie not so tender and mackerel was a tad greasy starter of halloumi fries and chilli jam was very good- but service was excellent and the place was packed. Breakfastwas excellent - choices from a menu no going up to get cereal and fruit - but I thought it was better. I had a granola, fruit and compote along with sour dough and husband had full English - both excellent, even gave us bit of bacon, sausage and black pud for the dog. Will come back without a doubt.
A lovely stay, at superb venue.
It's been a few years since we stayed at the Cavendish Arms, I think we ended up back in the same room, which was lovely and perfect for our short break. The service and food was excellent, very friendly staff and we'll be back soon.
Charming and welcoming
Cartmel has a real community feel to it and is in easy distance from the sea. The Cavendish is a great place to stay it is a proper old pub with food. The difference is that the food is exceptional and the welcome warm.We genuinely felt that nothing would be too much trouble.Sadly we only stayed one night on a Sunday and so only had s Sunday roast but it was one of the best we have ever had and at our age that is saying something!
Lots of character
Very enjoyable one night stay. Comfy, quiet room. Great evening meal. Busy restaurant with good atmosphere .
Brilliant
Lovely 3 night stay at the cavendish Food is delicious staff are very attentive ,pleasant and courteous Housekeeping is impeccable We would definitely stay again and recommend to our family and friends
Perfect,perfect,perfect
Felt at home as soon as we crossed the threshold. All of the staff are friendly, polite and have a great sense of humour. We ate both nights and the food was top class. The rooms are quirky and perfectly comfortable. To sum up this was a place full of character, full of characters. We will certainly return.
Lovely relaxing stay
We stayed here at the end of last month and honestly couldn’t fault a thing . The room was lovely and had everything you could need . The tray with tea ,coffee ,biscuits etc was just brilliant and was replenished each morning . And I’ve got to say how spotlessly clean everywhere was ! We saw the cleaners (2 lovely ladies) always hard at work . Food was exceptional and everyone who served us were friendly and helpful. Would recommend a stay here in a heartbeat and will definitely be back .
Enjoyable stay
Six of us stayed for two nights - the rooms were lovely. We at on the first night and really enjoyed the food. The staff all looked after us - a very enjoyable stay.
Fantastic
We always love to Come and Stay at The Cavendish, lovely Comfortable Room and Great Breakfast and Dinner,Richard always goes Above and Beyond to look after his Customers.
Another lovely visit
Another lovely visit to Cartmel at the CavendishLovely room, good food and being so well looked after by all the wonderful staff
Value for Money
The price we paid for 2 nights was very good. The room was immaculately clean.Service was 10/10.Lovely location and lovely room. The one niggle:The television malfunctioned or had some form of alarm left on it. In the middle of the night the power light flashed on and off repeatedly and we had to unplug the TV to get it off. If either of us were epileptic this would have been a real issue!
Warm, welcoming lodgings, in the heart of beautiful Cartmel
The Cavendish, as befits the name (a distinguished moniker of some standing in the area!) is a proper hotel -a place where things are just done well. From the warm welcome of the helpful and friendly staff - all of whom were excellent btw -to the very tasty bar/restaurant food, and the well-appointed and comfortable rooms, it ticks all the boxes. Location too doesn't disappoint; situated on the lane just through the old National Trust Priory gatehouse, very near the parking spots at the racecourse or the village square nearby, it's an ideal HQ for a Cartmel stay. I've been twice now, and wouldn't hesitate to book again - it was also very good value incidentally. Only one wee quibble (and it's actually not such a big deal depending on the kind of traveller you are). The Cavendish is - as with practically all of the houses in the historic centre of the village - in a very old building, with very thick stone walls, and an internal layout going back many many years re: the camber of floors and corridors etc. As such, the internet connection in our room was very weak - and sometimes not at all. It wasn't a biggie for us, as we enjoyed disconnecting a bit during our stay; plus you could easily pop down to the bar and get a strong signal if need be. And of course, there's a TV in the room too. So if you can overlook that - and when set against the high quality of the place overall - you will not be disappointed. So a big thank you to all at The Cavendish. And we hope to see you again in the future.
Nice old pub
Really nice pub, staff were friendly. WiFi in my bedroom kept dropping off. But apart from that a very nice stay.
Excellent
Spent an excellent night at the Cavendish Arms. Very nice clean quiet room with balcony and a comfortable bed. Enjoyed good food in the restaurant downstairs. Would definitely stay again.
Excellent
The building itself is gorgeous. Gnarly beams hold up the low ceilings, flagged floors and cosy rooms make up the bar/restaurant area. Food is really delicious and served by friendly staff. Bar frequented by locals which speaks volumes in itself. We stayed in one of the hotels rooms outwith the old Cavendish Arms and had to walk across the square for breakfast - no problem. Our room was lovely and very quiet. We slept well.Only issue would be if you weren't steady on your feet as you have to walk up external staircase to room which might be a bit steep.Cartmel is gorgeous. Try out Unsworths Yard - music Friday and Saturday with excellent pizza shop, craft brewery and wine bar. What more do you need?
Great place to stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Cavendish Arms 16 - 18 Aug.Lovely old coaching inn with a welcoming open fire (after all it is Summer)!Beautiful decor with fabulous old photos of Cartmel on the walls.Food was delicious and ate in the restaurant both evenings. Menu was wonderful with lots of choice.Staff were very welcoming, friendly and couldn’t do enough for you.Our room was nice. I booked a small double and maybe should have booked something slightly bigger. The room was spotlessly clean and tea & coffee choice in the room was excellent. We even had bath robes.Breakfast was simple but well cooked. The full English was included in the stay but at a supplement there were other choices too.My only slight criticism is that the toast was Sourdough bread. This was very hard to bite and chew once toasted. Was concerned I might break a tooth so didn’t eat it on the first morning. We just ordered un toasted sourdough the next morning which in our opinion was much easier to eat.The Cavendish Arms is in the centre of Cartmel which is so beautiful.Would definitely return.
Nice stay in lovely village
Very friendly pub/hotel right in the centre of Cartmel.Comfortable room ( though floors were even due to age of the property) Very friendly and helpful staff as well as great breakfast with locally sourced ingredients. Would have no hesitation in recommending it and was great value for money.
Lovely
Thank you we had a nice room with little balcony. Enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine.Room was very comfortable.
A fantastic stay
We loved it, such a happy time
We keep coming back!
We have been going to the Cavendish for as long as Richard as had has been at the proprietor and it is testament to the friendly and welcoming service provided that we are still going many many years later. There is always some new detail appears between visits and the steak pie must be the best in the country!! Already booked for next year!
Relaxed and comfortable with excellent food.
My wife and I stayed here for a delayed anniversary weekend on the recommendation of good friends. The Cavendish lived up to expectations with a relaxed environment, an inviting bar, excellent food and proved a good location for exploration of local areas such as Lake Coniston. All the staff were friendly and helpful with a special mention for Charlie for his guidance on local spots and for finding us a good table in the restaurant on both nights of our stay.
Exemplary
We highly recommend the Cavendish Arms. Our three night stay was most enjoyable. Our room overlooked the square, was quiet, very clean and well appointed. We ate in the restaurant on two of the three nights and the food was exceptional, as was the service even though the restaurant was busy. There was a good atmosphere in the restaurant with families and couples enjoying themselves plus a dog or two also having fun.Breakfast was of high quality and delicious: a special mention for the coffee! The staff were all charming and helpful: our thanks to them.
As always a wonderful few days
Once again a great stay.Very kind and friendly staff .We always appreciate the hospitality and are always made welcomeAlways very clean and tidy.
Great location & food
We have stayed here on a number of occasions & have always found it to be great. Love the location in the village & only 2minutes walk from the racecourse parking area. The food was lovely.
Clean and comfortable
Good 2 night stay. The room was basic but had everything we needed and was spotlessly clean. We were alerted to the issue with low water pressure which unfortunately meant a very mean trickle of a shower above a bath that was slightly precarious (good that the management was being upfront about the problem).Staff were great - friendly and efficient.
Wonderful
We really enjoyed our stay, the Perfect English room was wonderful, very good size, very comfortable bed, in a perfect location on the square. The service was excellent in the bar, restaurant, and upon check in. Superb evening meal and lovely breakfast, exactly what we had hoped for.Extremely hard working staff and theyalways had a smile. We will definitely return.Thank you much appreciated.
Great Stay at the Cavendisn
Stayed again at the Cavendish after a long time.Room was great, very clean and tidy.Great selection of room drinks and a nice choc bar.All the staff were very helpful, friendly and kind.Had a good evening meal in the bar and a few good pints of well kept beers, very friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.Breakfast also did not disappoint.Would reccommend staying here.
Cavendish hotel
Brilliant check in good room small and compact food fantastic as were all the staff will defo stay again
Comfortable and good location
The staff are very friendly and the hotel is in a lovely and convenient location. It is very quaint and oldie world with a lovely fire and isvery clean with nice little extras in your room.It just is ready for a little tlc in some areas but good value for money. We will definitely stay again.
Peaceful and enjoyable
Had my reservations about staying in a pub/restaurant/hotel as to whether it would be too loud and ‘pub like’. I like a pub, but did not appreciate how the local area was an important overall peaceful area. Most people go elsewhere for the later evening drinks and left the Cavendish as a perfect place to stay. The room was value for money, don’t expect to pay the rate and find a five star hotel, what we paid was good value. There was one slight thing wrong, the wifi didn’t reach our room. At first frustrating, after, relaxing. We’ve seen some reviews saying the lighting control in the shower en-suite is too short. I wasn’t bothered, almost fun to shower in the dark, but I saw a review mentioning someone elderly without warning plunged into darkness would equal complaints, danger, not re-booking, this could be an issue. Most people won’t leave the lights on in the shower room as the noise of the fan gets on your nerves, so a longer timer shouldn’t be an issue.Felt a little odd checking in when the bar/restaurant was busy, felt a bit like we were in the way and inconvenient, but this lasted 5 minutes and was in our way to the room and felt welcome for the duration afterwards.I would have no hesitation to stay again or recommend staying here. Not sure there is anywhere better to stay in the area in our opinion.
Stay at the cavendish
We stayed at the perfect English flat - it was a lovely room and was immaculate. We had dinner and breakfast at the cavendish both were superb ! The ladies waiting in were brilliant and lovely ! Thank you
Good hotel in a lovely village
Really friendly hotel with a nice bar area and breakfast was very nice. Our room was quite small and the window was difficult to open but generally it was a very nice stay and we would definitely recommend.
Comfortable with good food.
Large comfortable room. Would have preferred walk in shower. Excellent food and staff. Would definitely stay again.
Staying for the race meeting
As always Richard & his staff gave a warm welcome when we arrived and catered for our every need whilst we were there, nothing is ever to much for trouble for them, and as always we enjoyed our stay very muchWe will be back soonAlan H.

Brilliant stay as usual thanks to Richard and all his staff for making us feel most welcome roll on next yearThanks againJill H. x
Welcoming and comforting
Fabulous location for a couple of days break.Amazing fantastic food and drinks, great accommodation in a beautiful setting. The wonderful team work incredibly hard to deliver great service and appear to be happy in their roles, lovely atmosphere. Our second time staying here and I’m sure we’ll be back.
Superb
We go every year for a meeting at the races and the hospitality and food is always first class . Richard and his staff always very polite and look after us well.
A great place to stay
A warm welcome, perfectly located in the centre of the village. A very clean and tydy room and a very comfortable bed.We would definitely rebook.
Ten out of ten any day of the week.
I originally stuffed up the accommodation dates but kind hearted Richard painstakingly and uncomplainingly sorted it out to our relief! Would deffo return if I’m ever again in this lovely place to this wonderful establishment. And Richard:You and your team gave us great memories to take back to Australia with. Bless you xx
Everything we hoped it would be.
As a couple with a well behaved dog, we like to stay in accommodation which is well appointed, warm and friendly. The Cavendish did not let us down. It came on good recommendation. The food was excellent, the dog friendly accommodation was just right. From the ownership down, the attention to detail was at all times friendly and helpful. We will be staying again and can wholeheartedly recommend everything about the Cavendish at Cartmel.
A delight
We stayed for one night whilst walking in the Lakes. The Inn provided all the required facilities to a high standard. The food was especially good and so were the staff.
A very pleasant stay
We had a lovely room with a little balcony overlooking the garden and the Priory. There was a minor issue on arrival which was resolved entirely to our satisfaction. It’s a very convenient place to stay in Cartmel - right at the heart of the village.
Birthday treat
Kind staff, helpful.Food for dinner was excellent . Great choice.Bed comfortable. Breakfastsuperb.Had a great chat with Richard before we left.Definitely stay again
Just lovely, the staff couldn't do enough for us. Anna was very helpful and made our stay very please.t,thank you 💖
We loved our stay here at the Cavendish Arms. Lovely old quirky building with lots of character and charm. The room was clean and fresh with nice little touches.
As always our stay at the Cavendish was beautiful!
Staff are always so helpful and polite, food is delicious, and always re book our next visit to cartmel at the cavendish!
Quiet and comfortable
Clean, comfortable room with the same simple country feel that's at the heart of this lovely village. Though yards away from the village square it was wonderfully quiet- except for the music from the venue opposite the priory which is definitely not the Cavendish's fault! I liked the separate residents' door and the wonky corridor walls and floor that remind you of the history of the building. To be highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a sense of place.
ALL GOOD!
Spent three enjoyable days with Richard and his team.Good breakfast and staffpolite and efficiebt.....Parking a slight problem and noise from builders nextdoor anoying, but great for a short break in The Lakes!
Excellent
Great food, comfy room, friendly reception
Another lovely visit
As alwaysgreat locationfriendly staff lovely room and lovely food
perfect break, perfect location
Had a brilliant two night stay in The Cavendish Arms in the beautiful Cartmel.Room was spotless, staff were lovely and the pub food & breakfast was beautiful.Could not have been a better stay - didn't want to come home and it didn't rain !! Thank you.
Excellent Food
We stayed for one night recently the food was excellent. We had Roast cod and the presentation was Master Chef quality.
Lovely stay
Most things lovely just wish there was a little area in bar where you could have a drink with a bar meal later
Great Stay
We are a group that were planning to cycle around the Lake District for five days. The support from the hotel staff, particulaly with regard to the storage of our luggage which was transported around the lakes by an independent company.Good food, comfortable rooms made for a great experience
Another excellent stay
We had another excellent stay for the May Bank Holiday races. Thanks again to Richardand the team.
Character hotel
Lovely old coach house hotel with so many original features. Cartmel is a 'chocolate box' village and is so peaceful and quiet. Several good quality restaurants in the village and the Cavendish is high on that list. Great place for a getaway weekend.
just what we needed
Not only a comfortable room and friendly hospitality but excellent food for breakfast and a lovely conversation with our hosts. Location was superb. Ethos and straightforwardness just what we admire in a small, family run hotel.
Loved My Stay!
Pleasure of a stay. Great sized rooms. Great breakfast. Thanks for the stay, would recommend. Will stay again soon. Best, Joe P
Great one night stay
The room was comfortable, bathroom was a bit precipitous (need nonslip bathmat), good food & ambience in the bar, friendly & helpful staff, parking a challenge.
Fabulous place to stay
Fabulous pub with rooms. Our room was absolute spotless (and I’m fussy). Beautiful modern bathroom and plenty of hot water. Lovely choice of teas and complimentary bottles of water. Breakfast was perfect, using local produce and beautifully cooked. I could not recommend this place enough. I just wish I lived closer to pop in for a drink and something to eat on a regular basis
Good Stay
Very friendly and extremely efficient team.
Fabulous stay
We were warmly welcomed by very helpful staff. Nothing too much trouble food great. We would highly recommend and happily stay here again
Weekend Stay
Very friendly welcome from Richard and his staff excellent customer service home cooked breakfast most enjoyable stay
Excellent
Fantastic stay at the Cavendish Arms, warm friendly staff, comfortable room with nice touches such as proper leaf tea and filter coffee.Wonderful food especially the roast cod and sticky toffee pudding.Would definitely recommend and will definitely book again.
Lovely nights accommodation
A warm welcome was the start of a lovely stay. A well appointed bedroom. Dinner offered a wide menu choice cooked to a high standard. All this in the wonderful setting of Cavendish. Would happily revisit.
Atmospheric Pub with Rooms
The pub is in a wonderful position in the village and very conveniently positioned for visiting any of the Rogan restaurants, which we did on our first evening. On our second evening we dined in the Cavendish and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The rooms are "shabby chic".We were travelling with our son and his partner and had rooms 9 and 10.10, which they had, has the cutest little balcony over-looking the beer garden with views of the church.Room 9 was perfectly adequate overlooking the, quiet, road at the front.Beds were comfortable and breakfast excellent (although it appeared to be rather understaffed). There are quite a few things in the room that could be improved (and I did mention these on check-out).Most importantly in room 9 the arrangement for storing clothes with the chest of drawers actually under the hanging rail making it difficult to hang anything, is very awkward.A box of tissues in the room would be appreciated. The room really lacks places to put things down. As with a lot of establishments, it could be improved greatly, I believe if "management" spent a night in the room to see what is awkward/missing.I did not come away with the impression that the Cavendish has expended much thought about making life convenient for their guests.Check-in was a bit chaotic as you have to come into the pub and, unless you are very lucky, there is no parking outside so getting luggage in whilst not causing a traffic jam in the village and disturbing those enjoying their lunch in the pub is quite a challenge. The creation of one/two "pull-in" spaces to be used for 10 minutes to load/unload would be very helpful and entirely possible.Once unloaded, parking in the village car park whilst not cheap (nothing in Cartmel is cheap) is perfectly convenient as it is close by and not the nuisance I had anticipated.I would also give consideration to the creation of a small reception area at the foot of the stairs so that hotel guests do not have to disturb diners - Just a sign and a bell to attract attention would be all that was needed.
Very comfortable stay
Very good place to stay. Good food and service, comfortable rooms, very clean, excellent choice of teas and drinks in the room. Would stay again.
Fantastic, and great value
A proper “inn with rooms”, and very reasonably priced too.Really welcoming staff, great breakfast, and an excellent evening menu too.Good selection of ales and wines. All in a lovely location. Can’t ask for more. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.Oh, and the dog was made as welcome as we were 😎
Great Food and Service
We had rented a place to stay near by for my birthday., although my son and his girlfriend stayed here too. They said the room and breakfast was great. 11 of us had dinner here one night and the food and service was fantastic. The vegan options were limited although the staff and chef went out of their way to accommodate my daughter. Warm and cosy. Well worth it.
Lovely stay as always
Always enjoy staying at the Cavendish. Staff are brilliant. Rooms are excellent- clean, comfortable and beverages well stocked. Food in the restaurant was amazing as always and we love the new menu. Be back again soon to try some more new dishes x
Friendly and very comfortable stay.
Couldn't be more friendly with with very comfortable characterful room and great breakfast. Will stay again anytime.
Like Every Time We Have Been Before
As usual, every time we visit the Cavendish, nothing changes ! The food is delicious, the staff helpful professional and friendly. On top of all this, Richard English is the prefect host. What more can I say? For a wonderful stay in Cartmel, there is nowhere else to stay. The Cavendish every time !
Excellent
Everything was as expected, hence why we've been staying at the Cavendish every year for the past 25 years. Richard and his team excel at what they do.
Perfect in every way
My husband and I arrived on a very busy Easter Sunday to be checked in very quickly and efficiently. We were booked in for a meal at 3:30 but as we had eaten a late breakfast I asked if we could eat later, the guy was extremely polite, helpful and very patient to look at the very busy and full restaurant to be able to fit us in later that afternoon, he did this whilst the bar was very busy but gave his time to accommodate my request, we were so impressed as he could have easily said no we are fully booked? We were also impressed of how easily and efficiently the small group of staff worked together with managing both the bar and restaurant, brilliant team work. The food was amazing we had the Sunday roast and it was perfection as was our bedroom so lovely and peaceful, and breakfast again was perfect, thank you to the Cavendish Arms team for a wonderful Easter break x O and I have a restaurant reservation again for May bank holiday weekend for me and my family for the perfect Sunday Roast, can’t wait to see you guys again , keep up your amazing work you are all fabulous 🙌🙌🙌
Great!
We really enjoyed our two night stay at The Cavendish. Nice room (shower not overly overful though). Great food, great friendly staff, good atmosphere. Would definitely stay again. 😊
An excellent and relaxing stay
Very clean and comfortable room...Nice bed linen and lovely white fluffy towels in bathroom plus an abundance of hot water. Breakfast was excellent, good quality ingredients well cooked. The beverage tray in room was most impressive.Proper tea leaves plus tea pot and real coffee. The hot chocolate was very good. The staff were most helpful and pleasant and very considerate to our visually impaired friends. Thank you one and all for a lovely stay and we hope to return.
Lovely
We booked two room and had a lovely stay. It is quaint and really charming. The pub downstairs is fantastic and they stock the rooms with all kinds of goodies. It’s clean, excellent location, and staff was wonderful. Morning breakfast was excellent.
Third visit
Have visited Cartmel previously to dine at Rogan and Co and both times came to the Cavendish for drinks. The food looked and smelled lovely both times. This time we decided to eat and stay here. Wasn’t disappointed. Room and dinner were great and breakfast was exceptional.
Excellent
Very comfortable room with excellent facilities.Fabulous breakfast
Excellent Hotel
Really lovely and friendly staff , lovely log fire in the bar makes it so cosy.. breakfast was fabulous. Our room was a small double but still had everything we needed and super clean.
Great atmosphere
Comfortable stay in a great pub with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.Enjoyed the breakfasts and evening meal.No parking at the pub but the racecourse car park that you have to pay for, is only a short walk away.
Excellent
Richard and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating , great place to stay and eat , exploring the area added to the positive experience…
Pleasant two Night Break
We enjoyed a pleasant two night stay for our wedding anniversary. The Cavendish has loads of character and a cosy feel.
Sensational
We've just left The Cavendish after a one night stay and couldn't wait to write a review. Wow - what a place.I've been to The Cavendish before for food and drinks and it has always been a favourite of mine in Cartmel however I had never stayed over before.I booked the room and told my partner how amazing the place is for food and drinks - she was expecting big things and The Cavendish did not fail to deliver. We stayed in room 7 which we felt lucky to have been allocated with its view over the back garden and with the priory in sight. The room was lovely, spacious, warm and had great tea and coffee facilities. The bed was very comfortable and there was absolutely no noise from the pub downstairs. A classic Inn-style room.Onto the food. I had had food at The Cavendish before and my last visit I had the steak and ale pie which I was delighted to see had been kept on the menu. To start we had the mackerel croquettes and crab croutes which were both lovely. Great portion sizes and very tasty.I had to have the steak and ale pie again and it was just as nice as the last time I had it. OUTSTANDING. One of the nicest restaurant pie's I've ever had - cannot recommend it enough. The side of chips and sweet red cabbage are perfect accompaniments. My partner had the chicken and gnocchi dish which she was stunned by. I think the chicken has genuinely had a profound impact on her as she's still talking about it 24hrs later and I suspect she will be doing so until we return to The Cavendish. Tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned chicken. Unbelievable dish. The asparagus and peas were cooked to perfection. For dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding and lemon posset. Both were amazing and the lemon posset was a perfect palette cleanser after our mains. The staff are lovely, attentive and can't do enough for you.On a whole - The Cavendish is a gem amongst gems. In such a lovely little village it stands out as the nicest Inn with the friendliest staff. Whether you stay over or go for food or drinks - it is a must when you visit Cartmel. The garden backs onto the river Eea which is relaxing and picturesque, especially in the summer months. We can't recommend The Cavendish enough and we won't be staying elsewhere for future Cartmel visits. A credit to the village.
Friendly and quaint
Room quirky and comfortable, very atmospheric. Food splendid. Manager indeed gracious and friendly. Beautiful area even when it rains. We had a truly great stay. Thank you to all the staff.
Superb
Richard and his amazing crew were brilliant. Couldn’t have been more helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Also dined in the restaurant and again everything was great from the service to the food. The room was great and had everything we needed.Would highly recommend as well as can’t wait to return.
Lovely location, great service
This is the third time I’ve stayed here - we had a room in the building off the square and whilst the fire escape type steps to the rooms wouldn’t suit everyone, they were fine for us.The room was lovely as was the bathroom. Lovely bed and so comfy, quiet and close the pub and the walks - perfect!Have to mention the food at the Cavendish, we had dinner there and it was just delicious, absolutely beautiful Hake and then a rice pudding that I didn’t want to share!!! Breakfast there was also gorgeous. Great value and a lovely stay, thank you!
Another amazing stay
This is the second time we’ve stayed and we thoroughly enjoyed both visits. The food is amazing, we had dinner and breakfast and would definitely recommend eating there. The bar area is lovely and welcoming- can recommend the cocktail's especially the Hendricks Mule & the Old Fashioned. Will definitely be going back.
Always consistently good
We have stayed at the Cavendish Arms several times over the last 10 years and always enjoy the experience. Every time we have stayed with our dogs and they have been welcomed by the friendly, professional staff and excellent owner. This is a venue that is genuinely dog friendly. The staff are efficient, the food and drinks are very good, and the rooms are comfortable and well appointed. We will return here anytime we come back to Cartmel.
Lovely, cosy pub!
Really lovely pub and welcome. Great fire place in the bar and my favourite English wine served by the glass which is always a win!Delicious breakfast and a comfy bed! Only criticism would be the shower not having great power but i don't believe this to be their fault and the rest more than made up for it! we will be back!
Really enjoyed our stay yet again made us feel welcome and nothing too much trouble
Excellent
Lovely village pub/B&B
Our double room was very clean and comfortable. Good choice for Breakfast in the morning. Overall a Great place to stay.
Fabulous
We will be back! Wonderful place, perfect location, staff were great, friendly, helpful but not over the top, and the mushroom risotto….. wow! Great place!
Wonderful
Lovely week end as usual standard of food excellent Did a lovely walk and enjoyed roaring log fires ,lovely food and welcoming staff x
Excellent
Lovely stay at the Cavendish.Welcomed by Richard who helped us with our bags. Very warm welcome on our first visit to Cartmel. We ate in the restaurant both nights. Highly recommend it. Our dog was made very welcome. So disappointed that we couldn’t stay longer. Will definitely go back.
NYE
We came to Cartmel a few times last year, just for meals at the Cavendish, always thoroughly enjoyed the food & staff are all very friendly. So we decided to come with friends for NYE & stayed for a few nights. We all enjoyed it so much, booked again for this year.
Amazing
Thanks to host Richard and his fantastic staff for another great stay at the Cavenish Arms. We love coming here, the Chef is brilliant and the food is delicious and their New Years Eve is fantastic. Look forward to doing it all again this year.
Fantastic and personal as always.
We were looking to visit Cartmel to celebrate in the run up to New Year and we wanted to come back to the Cavendish for the 3rd time. As always Richard and his team accommodated us and ensured a wonderful stay. Lovely place to stay in Cartmel and will always be our first choice.
Lovely stay
Love the cavendish, been a few times to eat but this was our first time staying. Food (dinner and breakfast) and staff are great, the setting is amazing with the low roof and roaring fire. Rooms are fine, some nice touches with cafetière and fresh herbal teas. Only negative is the bathroom could definitely do with updating and the shower wasn’t great at all, but other than that we really enjoyed our stay.
Peaceful getaway
We had such a lovely stay at the cavendish arms. The room was cosy and clean, with more than your usual tea and coffee selection. The pub food was lovely and the breakfast service was great.Would highly recommend.
Home from Home
What a lovely little gem, in Cartmel. Warm, friendly, and the staff were amazing nothing was too much trouble. The food was gorgeous would definitely stay there again.
Gorgeous welcoming stay
We have stayed at Cavendish Arms several times now and always love it. This time was even more fun as we were invited to the party to celebrate Richard being there for 20 years. Look forward to our next trip.
Excellent
Excellent hospitality from start to finish.
Fabulous Stay
We loved staying at the gorgeous pub. There was a real sense of history in this lovely cosy pub. The breakfast & service was really good. Very relaxing.
Excellent stay as always
.
Very Good food and ambience
Excellent food fantastic ambience in bar and restaurant. Excellent service.Comfortable room.Shame about lack of reserved parking due to large parking space now with covered tables as a result of covid rules. Needs space for one car per room as parking in Cartmel 1 and 2 hour spaces
Atmospheric, comfortable, friendly and very good food
The Cavendish is a very old building that oozes atmosphere and charm. The staff are friendly and accommodating. The room was clean with a very comfortable bed with high quality bedding. The food was very good with quality ingredients. This was the third time I had stayed and I will be back. I would unreservedly recommend the Cavendish.
Fantastic
Staff very friendly and helpful food excellent stayed in a dog friendly room lovely and clean
as always a great place to stay
The title says it all really, we are frequent visitors to Cartmel and the Cavendish is now always our 1st choice. Its old and quirky but warm and welcoming. The rooms are very comfy, imaculately clean with all the little touches in the bedroom you'd expect from somewhere very upmarket, like a teapot and cafetitere, with a choice of loose tea and ground coffee to go with! The breakfasts are substantial and very tasty, the food in the bar at night likewise and all for a great price. A very nice place to stay with great food, great staff and a lovely atmosphere.
A lovelystay.
Friendly, helpful staff, calming stay.We would like to visit again next year.
Very enjoyable
First time in Cartmel, thought it was a lovely place. The Cavendish Arms was a nice surprise, we will certainly go back and will try the Bar meals, we had breakfast which we really enjoyed.
Fabulous!
Wonderful breakfasts; wonderful still evenings; wonderful accessibility for L'Enclume. Agnes + Artur make the dining room a special place -- they are extremely thoughtful.
Excellent
A lovely and very welcoming inn with very good facilities staffand excellent food , drinks and atmosphere. Is on our bucket list for s definite return.
Lovely South Lakes break
Stayed here as our daughter bought us a voucher. Set in the picturesque village of Cartmel the Cavendish Arms is an absolute gem. Good selection of well kept beer some from the local brewery which is just around the corner, very nice wine list as well. Very comfortable clean rooms. The food was outstanding great breakfasts and fabulous Sunday lunch and Evening meal on Monday. Definitely the best Sticky Toffee pudding my wife and I have had.
Absolutely delightful
Fantastic place. Lovely people looking after us royally. Food was wonderful using fresh tasty produce. Everything was spot on. We had a relaxing comfortable two night stay. Thank you very much, wouldn't hesitate to return.
Overall very good but spoiled by the organisers of the medieval event on the Saturday
We ate at the Cavendish Arms on the Thursday night and the food and service was great. Unfortunately the organisers of the medieval even on the Saturday completely spoiled our Cartmel experience. They closed the road exits from the town at 9:00 and sent us down a muddy single track to exit the town. When we got to the exit point on the diversion we found the gate locked. We turned back, but by this time others had come down the track. Apparently they had not planned to open the exit until 9:30 ! Shocking organisation but nothing to do with the Cavendish Arms.
Another excellent stay
Stayed for 5 days . The room was comfortable and included tea and coffee. Breakfast was excellent and included in the price with plenty of different options. The staff are all very friendly and nothing is to much trouble. It's best to book a table for the restaurant as it can get very busy with a very varied menu. Will definitely be back.
Fantastic stay
We stayed for one night in room no 6 and couldn’t fault the room or the hospitality.Check in was friendly and prompt. The room was spotless and lovely. Really liked the cafeteria and loose leaf tea choices in the room too.We slept well and it was so quite.Breakfast the next morning was great with plenty to choose from.We would definitely stay again and recommend to our friends.
Warm and very welcoming
Excellent value for money, lovely breakfast and dinner great hospitality, nice room. Perfect location.
Relaxing weekend break
We spent a lovely relaxing weekend. We stayed in room 5 which, as always, was extremely comfortable, lovely big bed, clean bathroom, plenty of room and two comfy chairs. We ate in the restaurant where there was plenty of food choices on the menu. Food always amazing. The service was great, the staff friendly, welcoming and go out of their way to ensure we have everything we need.Thank you to you all for making our stay so enjoyable. We’ll be back again soon.
Quality experience!
Not our first visit to the Cavendish and certainly won’t be our last.Excellent accommodation accompanied by top quality food and drinks.Service is of the highest standard.Get lots of repeat business which speaks for itself.
Lovely Country Inn
Enjoyed a lovely three day stay. Spacious comfortable room with ensuite in room across square. Good breakfast, good evening meal with hand pulled local IPA.Did some good local walks including Cumbria Coastal Path and used train from nearby Cark to walk around Arnside and Silverdale headland.Would recommend.
Nice place to stay
Lovely hotel very peaceful, apart from the bathroom fan, overpriced food, didn't like the percolated coffee in the room, personal choice
Amazing!
First time staying in Cartmel and had the most amazing stay. The staff were so friendly and very welcoming. Will definitely be back!
Great B&B
We stayed 3 nights and had a great time. The room was clean and comfy with a good shower. The breakfast room was well set-out each morning and the food itself was excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would stay again.
Fabulous place to stay
Excellent stay for two nights.Lovely room, loved the Sunday roast, it was outstanding and well worth the price.Staff are amazing, nothing was too much trouble. Lovely chat with the owner on the morning we left. We will be back.

Lovely Stay at Cavendish Arms
We have spent a lovely two night stay at the Cavendish Arms in Cartmel in their Perfect English Rooms.Comfortable rooms and tasty breakfasts
1 Night stay
Room spacious and clean.Good breakfastNo shower curtain and higher wall fitting for the shower but managed for 1 night.Notice other rooms have spacious walk-in showers.
Brilliant
Fantastic, as always, Richard and his excellent staff looked after us all weekend and made our trip to Cartmel the best.
Really great
This is supposed to be two star but it is better than many 4 star hotels I have been in. Bedrooms are quaint but confortable, the range of drinks in the room was impressive and well laid out. The restaurant served an amazing steak and the staff were always polite helpful and cheerful, we would go back in an instant. Only slight criticism was the Wifi wasn't great when I was in our room.
Really good trip
Place was class , had a meal,on Sunday night , excellent
Stay at the Cavendish
Our stay at the Cavendish as always was very enjoyable ! Both the service and the food was excellent!
Excellent Stay
Stayed 3 nights at The Cavendish in a Perfect English room (22). Also ate in the restaurant on 2 evenings. Very comfortable room and excellent food, including the breakfasts. Staff extremely hard working, polite and professional. My only suggestion would be that for room 22, where the shower is in the bath, to provide a non slip bath mat. Would definitely stay here and eat here again.
Loved it!
What a beautiful place to stay - welcoming staff, great food and alcohol selection; I recommend the steak & ale pie followed by sticky toffee pudding, washed down with a good Argentinian Malbec!
Another great stay
We have been visiting Cartmel for short breaks for 5 years and have always stayed at The Cavendish. This time we had Room 10 which had a lovely little balcony overlooking the beer garden. Both the room and bathroom were spotless. We had a meal in the restaurant which was absolutely delicious and a bottle of very acceptable red wine!Breakfast was well cooked and again delicious. The staff are all lovely and it was grrat to see Richard at breakfast. We will return!
60th birthday celebration
We booked 4 rooms for my husband’s 60th birthday weekend so that we could share this beautiful gem in our favourite village with the family. They were not disappointed and we had a really lovely stay. Thanks to the whole team for making our stay so comfortable and welcoming. See you all again soon.
Good location in the middle of Cartmel.
Staff very welcoming, food superb.Room was a bit small, automatic light and extractor fan drove us potty with the time it came off and on.Parking was difficult but we had a super time and will go again if we are in the area.
Excellent
Host Richard was extremely helpful regarding car parking for our 3 night stay. The room and bed were excellent. The food and service was the usual high standard. We will be back.

An excellent stay comfortable room and very good food. The only slight problem difficulty with internet connection.
Great place but rained a lot!
As always the Cavendish Arms is a wonderful place to stay. The rooms are all unique with country charm. The staff are all very helpful and it made our holiday very comfortable. Only problem was it rained a lot.
Lovely place to stay in Cartmel
Friendly and courteous staff.Quaint atmospheric building.Well stocked bar with good selection of local beers.Nice cosy garden view room with superb bath and shower facilities, great tea, coffee and biscuit selections, who doesn't like a Tunnock's!Evening meal was delicious, Seafood Pasta for me and a Risotto for the good lady.Great choices for Breakfast, but I did miss having Baked Beans with my delicious Full English.Would I stay again? You betcha.

Enjoyable as ever.
We have been coming here twice yearly ever since Richard took over. Each visit sees some improving tweak to the premises. Excellent food, in particular the steak pie is outstanding. We will be back again later this year!
Another lovely stay
Stayed here numerous times now and had a good break each time. We had room 4 which is small but cosy and characterful but spotlessly clean. The bathroom is modern and spacious. Facilities in the room were very good, all you need for a 2 night break. Breakfasts were excellent with a nice choice too. Service was quick and efficient and all the staff pleasant. We will book here again when next in this lovely village.
Superb as usual
Have stayed here on numerous occasions and our stay has always been a great experience. Richard and his staff are always very accommodating and professional in every way. We always eat at the Cavendish also and the food in the bar and breakfast has always been to high standard. Highly recommended

Very nice
The Cavendish Arms is a lovely place to stay, the room was clean and comfortable, the dining area is very nice and clean, the food was excellent and the staff were very helpful and friendly I would recommend a stay here.
Very good,
Lovely room, did not like the tea and coffee, only one fault the bath seal needed replacing, otherwise lovely and clean.
Very nice stay
Nice hotel in a beautiful English village, attractive rooms, and a cozy and good restaurant. Very friendly people. Also cozy outdoor garden at the back.
Up to the usual standard!
Our annual treat is to spend a night here, after enjoying a stroll along the promenade in Grange and around Cartmel village. The bedrooms are all different and the corridor, the stairs and the bar/dining room are quirky. The food is always of a very high quality and it is lovely sitting by the river with a pre-prandial.
Great Hotel
Lovely hotel and staff
superb
Great Staff, ,Great Food,Comfortable Rooms,Smashing Location
Very good
A nice hotel, and an excellent dinner. The precipitate blackouts in the bathroom were a bit disconcerting! The village needs to sort out car parking for hotel guests
Calm stay
What a wonderful characterful pub, full of modern amenities.Warm welcome and great large bedroom and ensuite. Nice to have tea leaves to make a proper cup of tea. Excellent breakfasts served to you from a good selection on the menu. We also had an evening meal which was very good, decent portions and very tasty too. Very highly recommended!

Lovely stay in Cartmel
The Cavendish Arms is a lovely hotel in which to stay, when visiting Cartmel. The hotel has nice rooms, which are comfortable and rustic. The hotel offers a good breakfast and a lovely bar area where dinner can be taken. The staff are very friendly. Parking is nearby, in the racecourse, only a couple of minutes away.
Amazing
We have stayed at the Cavendish several times and each time is as good as the last. We stayed in the loft room for the first time it was very cosy. Breakfast is excellent quality and food in the restaurant is exceptional. We will be back!!
Fabulous
Fantastic hotel in a great little village. The food and overall hospitality and service in the Cavendish Arms is second to none.We keep coming back.
Fabulous rooms
Perfect location, lovely rooms and food, would definitely return.
Great location
First time we have stayed in Cartmel and chose it as we were attending a wedding in nearby Holker Hall, stayed for 3 nights and ate there on 2 nights, food was excellent and very prompt service. Room was lovely with en suite bathroom. Car parking is limited in Cartmel but plenty of spaces available on racecourse, at a cost but not enough to spoil a long weekend break.
Just the job
Comfy room.Good food.Friendly staff
Lovely place
Great breakfast, albeit world prefer a buffet style for cereals, fruit etc.Lovely old building in an amazing setting. All staff were fantastic and friendly!Highly recommended!!!
Great 👍
Fantastic stay, staff very friendly
Excellent, good value stay
Staff were very helpful and friendly. Small but well equipped room in an adjacent building. Comfortable bed. Good breakfast - short menu but very well prepared, quality ingredients. Very accommodating of last minute dinner request and early check out
Lovely stay
Great location, room was exactly what I needed - I had a more compact room but space for a bag and to hang things. I thought the loose leaf tea was a nice touch too. Ate there both nights of my stay and the food and staff were fantastic, all tables full but nothing too much trouble and always with a smile. Would definitely go back.
Relaxed, Atmospheric, Tasteful & Dog-friendly
Great, dog-friendly room, attentive friendly service, excellent food, atmospheric and ideally located for walks and L’Enclume 50m away.

Wonderful weekend away excellent place to stay
We had arranged to meet with friends in Cartmel for the weekend and were recommended to book the Cavendish Arms which was definitely a great choice. We stayed in one of the Perfect English rooms for 2 nights situated across the square which was very spacious, clean and lovely and quiet, perfectly located to all the amenities. We ate in the restaurant one evening where the food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay would certainly book again.

Very Friendly

Excellent
Cartmel is a beautiful place and the Cavendish Arms is the perfect place to stay, room, staff and food all outstanding, would highly recommend
Comfortable accommodation
Really enjoyed our short stay. Comfortable, well equipped room. Good food and excellent service.
Very interesting old coaching inn
This is a very well-run unassuming old inn, kept spotlessly clean, with very friendly and helpful staff. The dining menu was sensible, and our food was well cooked and presented. The only negative feature is that, while one can (just about) drop off passengers and luggage, the absence of parking at the inn means one has to use the nearby race-course car-park, effectivly adding £10 a night to the cost of the room.
Response
HiThank you for your feedback,Due to the nature of the village, non of the businesses have a private car park. The Village car park is a 90 second walk away from us and charges £10 for a 24 hour stay, this equates to .42 penceper hour for overnight visitors to the village
Incredibly welcoming
We stayed for a long weekend, Arriving late even after the kitchen was closed they had prepared dinner for us by the fire. The whole team were so hospitable from start to finish, from dinner service to recommending some great walking routes. Would highly recommend.
Amazing little place for a getaway
Had a fantastic weekend thank you too Richard and his teamVery nice room spotless and comfortable we had a lovely meal in the restaurant thanks to the chef and his waiting staffIf you are staying make sure you book a table for food well in advanceLovely locationWell recommend a stay hereWill definitely be going backTracy & Tom
Welcoming
We love staying at the Cavendish and are regular visitors. The rooms are always spotlessly clean, well equipped and comfortable. The food is excellent with plenty of choice and very reasonably priced. The staff are brilliant, always welcoming and friendly. See you all again very soon 😉
Nice hotel
We have been to the Cavendish arms before but never stayed there, we were booked in for one night, the rooms were clean, comfy and with the age of the hotel the rooms were also a bit quirky as the bedroom floor had a incline of about 20 degrees, we loved the old sash windows it gave the room so much character that evening we had a chat about the rugby with a chap whos name escapes me but he was French and wonderful to speak too, we all had a really pleasant stay and the breakfast was spot onThank you Cavendish arms
Overnight stay
Our recent stay at the Cavendish was a delight as usual. The food, drinks and service were impeccable. We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay. Needless to say we look forward to seeing you all again soon. Many thanks.Ian and Janice Haymes
